McDonnell is married to Olivia Nugent from Keady, Co.Armagh they have four children Dearbhla; Ruairi (Randal Joseph); (Charles) Oisin; and Aileen. Ruairi is a committed Rugby and GAA player who recently played for Belfast Harlequins.
