Potential Troop Withdrawal

In January 2010, a newspaper article appeared in the mainstream British press claiming that as a result of budgetary constraints arising from the late 2000s recession, the British Ministry of Defence drew up controversial plans to withdraw the United Kingdom's 3,000 strong garrison from Cyprus, and end the use of Cyprus as a staging point for ground forces. Famous quotes containing the words potential, troop and/or withdrawal:

A child is born with the potential ability to learn Chinese or Swahili, play a kazoo, climb a tree, make a strudel or a birdhouse, take pleasure in finding the coordinates of a star. Genetic inheritance determines a child’s abilities and weaknesses. But those who raise a child call forth from that matrix the traits and talents they consider important.
    Emilie Buchwald (20th century)

Old soldiers, Miss Dandridge. Someday you’ll learn how they hate to give up. Captain of a troop one day, every man’s face turned toward ya. Lieutenants jump when I growl. Now tomorrow, I’ll be glad if the blacksmith asks me to shoe a horse.
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)

A separation situation is different for adults than it is for children. When we were very young children, a physical separation was interpreted as a violation of our inalienable rights....As we grew older, the withdrawal of love, whether that meant being misunderstood, mislabeled or slighted, became the separation situation we responded to.
    Roger Gould (20th century)
