Spiritual Doctrine

The spiritual doctrine of the Aïssâwa follows the earlier mystical tradition of the tariqa Shadhiliyya/Jazûliyya. This religious teaching first appeared in 15th century Marrakech and is the most orthodox mystical method to appear in the western region of North Africa known as the Maghreb.

Aïssâwî disciples are taught to follow the instruction of their founder by adhering to Sunni Islam and practising additional psalms including the long prayer known as "Glory to the Eternal" (Al-hizb Subhân Al-Dâ `im).

The original Aïssâwa doctrine makes no mention of ecstatic or ritual exercises such as music and dance.

Famous quotes containing the words spiritual and/or doctrine:

Drinking spirits cannot cause spiritual damage.
    José Bergamín (1895–1983)

The doctrine of those who have denied that certainty could be attained at all, has some agreement with my way of proceeding at the first setting out; but they end in being infinitely separated and opposed. For the holders of that doctrine assert simply that nothing can be known; I also assert that not much can be known in nature by the way which is now in use. But then they go on to destroy the authority of the senses and understanding; whereas I proceed to devise helps for the same.
    Francis Bacon (1560–1626)
