Origin: A Body Force Due To Acoustic Absorption in The Fluid

Acoustic streaming is a non-linear effect. We can decompose the velocity field in a vibration part and a steady part . The vibration part is due to sound, while the steady part is the acoustic streaming velocity (average velocity). The Navier–Stokes equations implies for the acoustic streaming velocity:

 \overline{\rho}{\partial_{t} \overline{u}_i}+\overline{\rho} \overline{u}_j {\partial_{j} \overline{u}_i}=-{\partial \overline{p}_{i}}+\eta {\partial^2_{jj} \overline{u}_i}-{\partial_j}(\overline{\rho v_i v_j} ).

The steady streaming originates from a steady body force that appears on the right hand side. This force is a function of what is known as the Reynolds stresses in turbulence . The Reynolds stress depends on the amplitude of sound vibrations, and the body force reflects diminutions in this sound amplitude.

We see that this stress is non-linear (quadratic) in the velocity amplitude. It is non vanishing only where the velocity amplitude varies. If the velocity of the fluid oscillates because of sound as, the quadratic non-linearity generates a steady force proportional to .

Famous quotes containing the words body, force, due, absorption and/or fluid:

    Undernourished, intelligence becomes like the bloated belly of a starving child: swollen, filled with nothing the body can use.
    Andrea Dworkin (b. 1946)

    ...here he is, fully alive, and it is hard to picture him fully dead. Death is thirty-three hours away and here we are talking about the brain size of birds and bloodhounds and hunting in the woods. You can only attend to death for so long before the life force sucks you right in again.
    Helen Prejean (b. 1940)

    I’m glad to find that you dislike Venice because I thought it detestable when we were there, both times—once it might be due to insanity but not twice, so I thought it must be my fault. I suppose the obscurer reaches might be beautiful.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

    These philosophers dwell on the inevitability and unchangeableness of laws, on the power of temperament and constitution, the three goon, or qualities, and the circumstances, or birth and affinity. The end is an immense consolation; eternal absorption in Brahma.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Eye, gazelle, delicate wanderer,
    Drinker of horizon’s fluid line;
    Ear that suspends on a chord
    The spirit drinking timelessness;
    Touch, love, all senses;
    Stephen Spender (1909–1995)
