Abhijeet Gupta

Abhijeet Gupta (born October 16, 1989) is an Indian chess player with the title Grandmaster. He hails from Bhilwara in Rajasthan.

Abhijeet has won many laurels for India, winning 19 medals in all in various World, Asian and Commonwealth Chess Championships in Sub Junior, Junior and Senior Category. Abhijeet became National Junior (Under-19) Chess Champion at the age of 13 years and 10 days in 2002, a record unsurpassed till 2011. Thanks to this achievement, his name was included in the Limca Book of Records in 2001 as the permanent record holder.

Abhijeet became an International Master in 2005 and went on to become an International Grand Master in the year 2008. Abhijeet started playing chess at the age of 6 and half years and in his very first National Championship he secured the Gold Medal.

In the last few years Abhijeet has had some tremendous successes. In the year 2012 won one gold and two silver medals in the recently concluded Asian Nations Chess Cup in China. He then also finished clear first in Philadelhia International in USA and the Kavala International in Greece. The year 2011 was his best so far with as many as three victories in the international tournaments and the national title. All international tournament victories were excellent efforts and the first was achieved at the Dubai International open tournament at Dubai in April 2011. This event is considered as one of the strongest open of the world. Abhijeet followed it up by winning the National title and then went on to win the Vizag International tournament before ending the year on a high with a brilliant 8/9 first place finish at the London Chess Classic FIDE open.

In addition, Abhijeet guided his team PSPB to a splendid victory in the National teams chess championship by winning the gold medal on board no. 1 with a cent per cent score which also fetched him the gold medal on the top board. He finished second in the Metz International chess tournament at Metz in France. The World Chess Cup was another attestation of Abhijeet‘s growing abilities in chess as he became the only Indian to reach the 3rd round.

In 2010, he won the Bronze medal in the Asian chess championship at Subic Bay in Philippines which also qualified him for the next world championship cycle. Abhijeet also tied for first place in the Reykjavik International Open Chess Tournament in Iceland and finished second in the prestigious Corus Chess Tournament (‘C’ group). In 2009, he tied for the first place in Kavala open in Greece and also won the junior gold in the same event. He also jointly won the 13th Bavarian open at Bad Weisesse in Germany in the same year and tied for the second place in the Subic open tournament in Philippines. In the junior category, Abhijeet was also adjudged the best under-20 in Acropolis 2009 tournament at Greece.

The year 2008 was glorious for Abhijeet as he won the Parsvnath International open chess tournament in New Delhi and the World Junior Chess championship at Gaziantep in Turkey besides winning the gold in the Commonwealth Junior chess championship. The same year he was also awarded the title of Grandmaster by virtue of his performances in the past. In 2007, Abhijeet won the Commonwealth Junior Chess Championship, was a member of the Indian team that won the silver medal in the Asian Teams Chess Championship-2007. Also he won the Bronze Medals in Commonwealth Chess Championship-2007.
