A (New York City Subway Service)

The A Eighth Avenue Express is a rapid transit service of the New York City Subway. Its route bullet is colored vivid blue on route signs, station signs, and the official subway map since it runs on the IND Eighth Avenue Line in Manhattan.

The A service operates at all times. The usual service pattern is between 207th Street in Inwood, Manhattan and Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, Queens (this is the longest one-seat ride in the system, at over 31 miles or 50 km) or Ozone Park – Lefferts Boulevard in Richmond Hill, Queens via Central Park West / Eighth Avenue Express in Manhattan, Fulton Street Express in Brooklyn and Liberty Avenue / Rockaway Local in Queens.

Five rush hour trips (designated in the schedule) run from Beach 116th Street in Rockaway Park, Queens to Manhattan during the morning hours and five rush hour trips run to Beach 116th Street from Manhattan during the late afternoon hours. At all times, a shuttle train (S – Rockaway Park Shuttle) operates between Beach 116th Street and Broad Channel.

During late nights, approximately 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. (Saturdays to 6 a.m., Sundays to 7 a.m.), the A service makes all stops along its entire route. After about 12:30 am, mainline A service runs between Manhattan and Far Rockaway and a separate A shuttle (Lefferts Boulevard Shuttle) runs between Euclid Avenue in City Line, Brooklyn and Lefferts Boulevard. This service is identified on the late night map as a grey A, and in the schedule as a blue S.

The A is the only service that has a transfer to each of the three shuttle services in the system (42nd Street in Manhattan, Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn (late nights), and Rockaway Park in Queens).

Famous quotes containing the words york, city and/or subway:

It is wrong to be harsh with the New York critics, unless one admits in the same breath that it is a condition of their existence that they should write entertainingly about something which is rarely worth writing about at all.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

Union of the weakest develops strength
Not wisdom. Can all men, together, avenge
One of the leaves that have fallen in autumn?
But the wise man avenges by building his city in snow.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    I leave you, home,
when I’m ripped from the doorstep
by commerce or fate. Then I submit
to the awful subway of the world....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
