- Fullback Steve Smith who played for the Raiders between 1987–1993 is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease since 2002. With the Raiders, Smith had an equally impressive career for a fullback, especially since he was a blocker for the like of Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson, and Napoleon McCallum. Smith's former teammates at Penn State and the Oakland Raiders have raised money to help Smith pay medical bills. In 1989 Smith married former Los Angeles Raiderette Chie Ohara.
