1973 World Figure Skating Championships

The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion.

The 1973 championships took place on February 26 to March 3, 1973 in Bratislava, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia. The opening ceremony was held at the Philharmonic of Bratislava. The Chairman of the organising committee was Miroslav Cerveka.

It was Irina Rodnina's first World title with her new partner, Alexander Zaitsev after her previous partner Alexei Ulanov chose to skate with Lyudmila Smirnova. The music stopped during Rodnina/Zaitsev's free program but the pair successfully completed the program in silence and received a standing ovation.

Famous quotes containing the words world, figure and/or skating:

The rising power of the United States in world affairs ... requires, not a more compliant press, but a relentless barrage of facts and criticism.... Our job in this age, as I see it, is not to serve as cheerleaders for our side in the present world struggle but to help the largest possible number of people to see the realities of the changing and convulsive world in which American policy must operate.
    James Reston (b. 1909)

Mining today is an affair of mathematics, of finance, of the latest in engineering skill. Cautious men behind polished desks in San Francisco figure out in advance the amount of metal to a cubic yard, the number of yards washed a day, the cost of each operation. They have no need of grubstakes.
Merle Colby, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
