1894-S Barber Dime - History of The 1894-S Dime

History of The 1894-S Dime

In the first half of 1894, 24 proofs of the Barber series dimes were minted in San Francisco, which is where the 'S' in the common name of the coin comes from. Very little is known as fact about the dimes. The superintendent of the San Francisco Mint is said to have had them minted as gifts for some important bankers. Further, three of the dimes were said to have been given to the superintendent's daughter who allegedly spent one on ice cream and sold the other two in the 1950s.

In an attempt to consolidate all known facts about the 1894-S Dime, Kevin Flynn, a well-known numismatist author, wrote a book in 2005 titled "The 1894-S Dime A Mystery Unraveled."

Famous quotes containing the words history of, history and/or dime:

Literary works cannot be taken over like factories, or literary forms of expression like industrial methods. Realist writing, of which history offers many widely varying examples, is likewise conditioned by the question of how, when and for what class it is made use of.
    Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956)

It is the true office of history to represent the events themselves, together with the counsels, and to leave the observations and conclusions thereupon to the liberty and faculty of every man’s judgement.
    Francis Bacon (1561–1626)

The whole value of the dime is in knowing what to do with it.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
