1825 English Cricket Season

The impact of this upon cricket's history is that it is only since 1825 that surviving records can be viewed with anything like complete confidence. Two of the greatest players of the 19th century, William Lillywhite and Ned Wenman, made their debuts in first-class cricket.

Famous quotes containing the words english, cricket and/or season:

    Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.
    Henry James (1843–1916)

    The field has droned the summer’s final mass;
    A cricket like a dwindled hearse
    Crawls from the dry grass.
    Richard Wilbur (b. 1921)

    Business by no means forbids pleasures; on the contrary, they reciprocally season each other; and I will venture to affirm that no man enjoys either in perfection that does not join both.
    Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
