Zrenjanin Airport - History

History

The Germans built the airport with concrete runway (1,800 metres long and 50 metres wide, the longest in the world at that time) in 1942 during the occupation of the Banat region, where Zrenjanin is located. The airport was used by Luftwaffe to carry military attacks on Serbia during World War II. After the war, the region and the airport were handed back to the Serbs. The concrete runway was destroyed by JNA in 1948 at the beginning of the Informbiro crisis and its remains are still visible.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

America is, therefore the land of the future, where, in the ages that lie before us, the burden of the World’s history shall reveal itself. It is a land of desire for all those who are weary of the historical lumber-room of Old Europe.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
