Background
While most earlier "person of the year" winners have been historically important individuals, some were symbolic representatives of a class of people, and a few were inanimate: the Computer ("Machine of the Year" in 1982), and "Endangered Earth" ("Planet of the Year" in 1988).
Similar media awards had already recognized the growing significance of online community and user-generated content: "you!" was ranked first in Business 2.0's list of "50 people who matter now" in July 2006; while ABC News had listed bloggers as "People of the Year" for 2004.

Famous quotes containing the word background:
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“In the true sense ones native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.”
—Emma Goldman (18691940)
“... every experience in life enriches ones background and should teach valuable lessons.”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
