In Fiction

In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou Shang is only portrayed as a minor character. He participated in the Battle of Mount Dingjun, as a subordinate of Xiahou Yuan, against Liu Bei's forces. Famous quotes containing the word fiction:

We can never safely exceed the actual facts in our narratives. Of pure invention, such as some suppose, there is no instance. To write a true work of fiction even is only to take leisure and liberty to describe some things more exactly as they are.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Americans will listen, but they do not care to read. War and Peace must wait for the leisure of retirement, which never really comes: meanwhile it helps to furnish the living room. Blockbusting fiction is bought as furniture. Unread, it maintains its value. Read, it looks like money wasted. Cunningly, Americans know that books contain a person, and they want the person, not the book.
    Anthony Burgess (b. 1917)
