WTA Tier I

The WTA Tier I tournaments were Women's Tennis Association tennis elite tournaments held from 1988 until 2008 season. Minimum prize money, from 2004 is $1,340,000. Two of the ten Tier I tournaments (Indian Wells and Miami) were played simultaneously with the ATP Tour Masters Series tournaments in those cities.

The Tier I tournaments were Miami and Berlin in 1988 and 1989. The list expanded to 6 events in 1990, 8 in 1993, 9 in 1997 and 10 in 2004, then scaled back to 9 for 2008.

From 2009 WTA Tour, WTA changed the tournament categories, so that majority of Tier I and Tier II tournaments from last seasons are in one category, WTA Premier Tournaments, although split in three divisions.
