World Tavern Poker Tour

World Tavern Poker Tour

World Tavern Poker (WTPT, World Tavern Poker Tour) is a free poker league in the United States. As of January 2013, close to 400 taverns, bars, and restaurants across the nation host weekly or twice-weekly tournament-format games. The manner of play is similar to a darts or pool league. All tournaments/games played in the Tour are No-Limit Texas Hold `em stud poker. Each tournament (which, at the bar level, is synonymous with a game; "tournament" refers to certain rules of play, particularly the continual raising of the blinds) begins with ten to hundreds of participants, and the winner is the last player with chips.

Famous quotes containing the words world, tavern, poker and/or tour:

    In former times and in less complex societies, children could find their way into the adult world by watching workers and perhaps giving them a hand; by lingering at the general store long enough to chat with, and overhear conversations of, adults...; by sharing and participating in the tasks of family and community that were necessary to survival. They were in, and of, the adult world while yet sensing themselves apart as children.
    Dorothy H. Cohen (20th century)

    Rude poets of the tavern hearth,
    squandering your unquoted mirth,
    which keeps the ground, and never soars,
    while jake retorts, and reuben roars;
    tough and screaming, as birch-bark,
    goes like bullet to its mark;
    while the solid curse and jeer
    never balk the waiting ear.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    The poker player learns that sometimes both science and common sense are wrong; that the bumblebee can fly; that, perhaps, one should never trust an expert; that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of by those with an academic bent.
    David Mamet (b. 1947)

    Do you know I believe that [William Jennings] Bryan will force his nomination on the Democrats again. I believe he will either do this by advocating Prohibition, or else he will run on a Prohibition platform independent of the Democrats. But you will see that the year before the election he will organize a mammoth lecture tour and will make Prohibition the leading note of every address.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
