World Junior Speed Skating Championships

In 1971, the ISU congress decided to hold a World Junior Speed Skating Championships. After 2 test-championships (1972 and 1973), where only boys were allowed to skate, the first official championship was introduced in Cortina d'Ampezzo. In this championship boys and girls can enter. Since this championship the World Junior Speed Skating Championships are held every year.

The distances the boys have to skate in a championship are the 500m, 1500m, 3000m and the 5000m. Girls have the 500m, 1000m, 1500m and the 3000m on the programme. In 2002 the team pursuit was added to the allround competition and the 2009 edition saw the introduction of medals for the individual distances.

Famous quotes containing the words world, junior, speed and/or skating:

The alcoholic trance is not just a haze, as though the eyes were also unshaven. It is not a mere buzzing in the ears, a dizziness or disturbance of balance. One arrives in the garden again, at nursery time, when the gentle animals are fed and in all the world there are only toys.
    William Gass (b. 1924)

The junior senator from Wisconsin, by his reckless charges, has so preyed upon the fears and hatreds and prejudices of the American people that he has started a prairie fire which neither he nor anyone else may be able to control.
    J. William Fulbright (b. 1905)

The greatest felony in the news business today is to be behind, or to miss a big story. So speed and quantity substitute for thoroughness and quality, for accuracy and context. The pressure to compete, the fear somebody else will make the splash first, creates a frenzied environment in which a blizzard of information is presented and serious questions may not be raised.
    Carl Bernstein (b. 1944)

Good writing is a kind of skating which carries off the performer where he would not go, and is only right admirable when to all its beauty and speed a subserviency to the will, like that of walking, is added.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
