World Conference On Breeding Endangered Species In Captivity As An Aid To Their Survival

The World Conference on Breeding Endangered Species in Captivity as an Aid to their Survival (WCBESCAS) is the world's first conference on Captive breeding. Started by the Fauna and Flora Preservation Society, due to efforts by the famous naturalist and pioneer of captive breeding Gerald Durrell, the first conference was held in 1972 at Jersey (on the basis that Gerald Durrell's Jersey Zoo - one of the few zoos of the world to practice captive breeding at that time - was located in Jersey). The conference provided a common scientific meeting ground for Captive breeding issues for the first time. The conference has been held at:

  • 1st WCBESCAS; Jersey, 1972
  • 2nd WCBESCAS; London, 1976
  • 3rd WCBESCAS; San Diego, 1979
  • 4th WCBESCAS; Harderwijk, 1984
  • 5th WCBESCAS; Cincinnati, 1988
  • 6th WCBESCAS; Jersey, 1992, 'The Roles of Zoos in Global Conservation'
  • 7th WCBESCAS; Cincinnati, 1999, 'Linking Zoos and Field Research to Advance Conservation'

Famous quotes containing the words world, conference, breeding, endangered, species, captivity, aid and/or survival:

There will be a world of water shed
Upon the parting of your wives and you.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

For 350 years we have been taught that reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man. Football’s place is to add a patina of character, a deference to the rules and a respect for authority.
    Walter Wellesley (Red)

The test of a man’s or woman’s breeding is how they behave in a quarrel. Anybody can behave well when things are going smoothly.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

Man is imperfect. The reality he creates is always endangered by man.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

Not only does every animal live at the expense of some other animal or plant, but the very plants are at war.... The individuals of a species are like the crew of a foundered ship, and none but good swimmers have a chance of reaching the land.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

    Had it pleased heaven
To try me with affliction, had they rained
All kind of sores and shames on my bare head,
Steeped me in poverty to the very lips,
Given to captivity me and my utmost hopes,
I should have found in some place of my soul
    A drop of patience.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

For this invention of yours will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn it, by causing them to neglect their memory, inasmuch as, from their confidence in writing, they will recollect by the external aid of foreign symbols, and not by the internal use of their own faculties. Your discovery, therefore, is a medicine not for memory, but for recollection,—for recalling to, not for keeping in mind.
    Plato (c. 427–347 B.C.)

The principle of avoiding the unnecessary expenditure of energy has enabled the species to survive in a world full of stimuli; but it prevents the survival of the aristocracy.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
