Worcester College of Technology - History

History

The College had its origin in a School of Design which was opened in Pierpoint Street in 1851. In 1894, a School of Science and Art was built in Sansome Walk as part of the Victoria Institute and this served as the headquarters of the College until 1962 when the new buildings in Deansway were occupied. In 1991, the College adopted its current name of Worcester College of Technology.

The college also has two main sites including its Art and Design and Sports departments (including beauty courses) on Barbourne Road, about a mile from the City Centre, and at other locations in the city.

In 1939 the annual College enrollment was around 600 students, most of whom attended evening classes. This has risen to 15,000 enrolled students in 2006, including 3,000 full-time students. Around 1,000 of the students are studying for Higher Education Qualifications. The college includes a Sixth Form Centre, offering A-Levels and other qualifications. No state schools in Worcester have sixth forms, and so it is one of only two Sixth Form Centres in the city.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.
    Georges Clemenceau (1841–1929)

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)
