WNLO - Newscasts

Newscasts

After WIVB began controlling WNLO in March 2001, the former debuted a nightly half-hour prime time newscast on this station. Known as The 10 O'Clock News, it competed with another show in the time-slot on Pax affiliate WPXJ-TV produced by NBC affiliate WGRZ-TV (it was eventually dropped in 2003). On April 20, 2006, WGRZ added a half-hour prime time newscast to WB (now MyNetworkTV) affiliate WNYO (WNYO briefly had its own News Central-based newscast from 2005 to 2006). In order to gain more viewers than WNLO, the second WGRZ 10 o'clock production originally featured ten minutes of news and weather with the rest dedicated to sports completing a half hour show. However due to low ratings, the sports segment was reduced to a traditional segment seen after weather.

WNLO has consistently led WNYO in the ratings, for a number of reasons. As of May 2011, it is the most popular late newscast (10 p.m. or 11 p.m.) in all of Western New York among persons 18 to 54, beating all of the 11 p.m. newscasts; among total viewers, it trails WGRZ and sister station WIVB. On February 2, 2009, WNLO began airing a two hour extension of WIVB's weekday morning show. Known as Wake Up! on CW 23, it aired from 7 until 9 while WIVB broadcasts The Early Show. The station airs its own locally produced morning talk show, Winging It! Buffalo Style during the 8AM hour. The station also repeats WIVB's hour-long weekend morning show (called Weekend Wake Up!) from noon until 1 and simulcasts an hour-long newscast Sunday nights at 6 (known as News 4 Weekend).

On February 1, 2012, WIVB became the last major Buffalo news operation to upgrade its newscasts to high definition. The WNLO show was included in the upgrade.
