Winterborne Houghton

Winterborne Houghton is a village in north Dorset, England. It is situated in a winterbourne valley on the Dorset Downs, five miles south west of Blandford Forum. As of 2001, the village had a population of 195.

The first name of "Winterborne" comes from the River Winterborne, which has its source at this village. The river only flows overground during the winter, hence the name. To the east is Winterborne Stickland and the river flows on to this village, eventually joining the River Stour.

The village church is named after St Andrew. It was designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt and built during 1861–62. It is in the Perpendicular style and faced with flint.

Famous quotes containing the word houghton:

From the beginning, the placement of [Clarence] Thomas on the high court was seen as a political end justifying almost any means. The full story of his confirmation raises questions not only about who lied and why, but, more important, about what happens when politics becomes total war and the truth—and those who tell it—are merely unfortunate sacrifices on the way to winning.
