The United States was also putting pressure on the United Kingdom at this time. The USA was against the idea of imperialism and wanted Britain to decolonize so that they could gain access to new markets and resources. The Cold War tensions that the USA was facing at the time had struck fear into the governments of the capitalist countries and left many with worries of communism. The American government believed that decolonization was a necessity to prevent the spread of communism from becoming an attractive options to the African nationalist movements that were in need of international support.
