Public Route System: Hub and Spokes

WATA operates what is often called a "hub and spokes" bus routing system. At designated intervals, the transit buses all meet at a coordinated time at a central location (in this instance the Williamsburg Transportation Center), and then serve various outlying areas in many directions on eight color-codes routes.

The "hub and spokes" route system does not include:

  • demand responsive paratransit service provided with smaller buses
  • rubber-tired trolley replica buses operated on the short shuttle loops at the Riverwalk Landing along the riverfront area at Yorktown.
  • Special routes linking points in the Historic Triangle and satellite parking which may operate on specified temporary schedules in conjunction with special events at Jamestown 2007.

Famous quotes containing the words public, route, hub and/or spokes:

Like those before it, this decade takes on the marketable subtleties of a private phenomenon: parenthood. Mothers are being teased out of the home and into the agora for a public trial. Are we doing it right? Do we have the right touch? The right toys? The right lights? Is our child going to grow up tall, thin and bright? Something private, and precious, has become public, vulgarized—and scored by impersonal judges.
    Sonia Taitz (20th century)

no arranged terror: no forcing of image, plan,
    or thought:
no propaganda, no humbling of reality to precept:
terror pervades but is not arranged, all possibilities
of escape open: no route shut,
    Archie Randolph Ammons (b. 1926)

There is no object so soft but it makes a hub for the wheel’d universe.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

Law makes long spokes of the short stakes of men.
    William Empson (1906–1984)
