Posterity
Long hated by the white South as a demon who perpetrated atrocities on Georgia civilians, Sherman was a popular hero in the North and well regarded by his soldiers. Military historians have paid special attention to his Atlanta campaign and the March to the Sea, generally giving him high marks as an innovative strategist and quick-witted tactician.
