William E. Riker - Decline and Death

Decline and Death

The rerouting of California State Route 17 to bypass Holy City caused a decline in visitors to Holy City. Financial difficulties eventually led to Riker losing control of the community in 1960. In 1966, at the age of 93, Riker converted to Catholicism. Riker died on December 3, 1969.

Famous quotes containing the words decline and/or death:

Our achievements speak for themselves. What we have to keep track of are our failures, discouragements, and doubts. We tend to forget the past difficulties, the many false starts, and the painful groping. We see our past achievements as the end result of a clean forward thrust, and our present difficulties as signs of decline and decay.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)

If society gives up the right to impose the death penalty, then self help will appear again and personal vendettas will be around the corner.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)
