William Ballantine - Other Cases

Other Cases

Among Ballantine's other notable cases were:

  • his successful prosecution of Franz Muller for the murder of Mr. Briggs in 1864,
  • his skilful defence of the Tichborne claimant in 1871, and
  • his defence of the Gaekwad (Gaekwar) Maharaja of Baroda in 1875, his fee in this last case being one of the largest ever known at the time.

Famous quotes containing the word cases:

In most cases a favorite writer is more with us in his book than he ever could have been in the flesh; since, being a writer, he is one who has studied and perfected this particular mode of personal incarnation, very likely to the detriment of any other. I should like as a matter of curiosity to see and hear for a moment the men whose works I admire; but I should hardly expect to find further intercourse particularly profitable.
    Charles Horton Cooley (1864–1929)

I do not believe in lawyers, in that mode of attacking or defending a man, because you descend to meet the judge on his own ground, and, in cases of the highest importance, it is of no consequence whether a man breaks a human law or not. Let lawyers decide trivial cases.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
