Famous quotes containing the words valley, fruit and/or company:
“Ah! I have penetrated to those meadows on the morning of many a first spring day, jumping from hummock to hummock, from willow root to willow root, when the wild river valley and the woods were bathed in so pure and bright a light as would have waked the dead, if they had been slumbering in their graves, as some suppose. There needs no stronger proof of immortality. All things must live in such a light. O Death, where was thy sting? O Grave, where was thy victory, then?”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“One of the last of the philosophers,Connecticut gave him to the world,he peddled first her wares, afterwards, as he declares, his brains. These he peddles still, prompting God and disgracing man, bearing for fruit his brain only, like the nut its kernel.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The company of women of fashion will improve your manners, though not your understanding; and that complaisance and politeness, which are so useful in mens company, can only be acquired in womens.”
—Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (16941773)
