Pickles was awarded the OBE for services to broadcasting in 1950.
He was the uncle of judge James Pickles and actress Christina Pickles, and great-uncle of actress Carolyn Pickles.
In 1955 he performed the opening of the Wilfred Pickles' School for Spastics at Tixover Grange, Rutland.
Wifred and Mabel celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1955 and returned to Sacred Heart church in Southport when they gave money for a statue of St Teresa which is still in the church today.They recorded Have a Go in the church hall (now demolished), and afterwards did a version of the show for the children in the attached school.
A public house, the Portman & Pickles, in Market Street, Halifax, is named after him and the film actor Eric Portman.
