Famous quotes containing the words ashes, american and/or flags:
“... the French know that you must not succeed you must rise from the ashes and how could you rise from the ashes if there were no ashes, but the Germans never think of ashes and so when there are ashes there is no rising, not at all and every day and in every way this is clearer and clearer.”
—Gertrude Stein (18741946)
“[If] Playboys Hugh Hefner has done nothing else for American culture, he has given it two of the great lies of the twentieth century: I buy it for the fiction and I buy it for the interview.”
—Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
“The flags are natures newly found.
Rifles grow sharper on the sight.
There is a rumble of autumnal marching,
From which no soft sleeve relieves us.
Fate is the present desperado.”
—Wallace Stevens (18791955)
