In 1951 247.2 hectares (611 acres) of the fen was designated a Site of Special Scientific Importance. It was listed as a 'Nature Conservation Review' site in 1977, and is designated a National Nature Reserve and a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance. As of 2011 the National Trust reserve is over 930 hectares (2,300 acres).
