The band Airborne Toxic Event took their name from the novel. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 2 episode 9, What's My Line: Part 1, the character of Principal Sydner tells the character Xander Harris, "Whatever comes out of your mouth is a meaningless waste of breath, an airborne toxic event."
