United States of America

Usually, North American locomotives have sand that can be dumped out either in front of or behind the trucks of a locomotive. In modern diesel locomotives there is a button that the driver will press to start sand dump. This button is tied to a computer system that determines the train's direction and where the sand should be applied: either forward or aft of the trucks. In older locomotives, though, there was a manual lever attached to a valve that had three positions: Off, Forward, and Aft. The engineer could flip this lever to dump sand in correspondence with the train's movement.

Famous quotes containing the words united states, united, states and/or america:

Places where he might live and die and never hear of the United States, which make such a noise in the world,—never hear of America, so called from the name of a European gentleman.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Then the American flag was saluted. In general, in the United States people always salute the American flag.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

If the dignity as well as the prestige and influence of the United States are not to be wholly sacrificed, we must protect those who, in foreign ports, display the flag or wear the colors of this Government against insult, brutality, and death, inflicted in resentment of the acts of their Government, and not for any fault of their own.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

In America the chief accusation seems to be one of “Eroticism.” This is odd, rather puzzling to my mind. Which Eros? Eros of the jaunty “amours,” or Eros of the sacred mysteries? And if the latter, why accuse, why not respect, even venerate?
    —D.H. (David Herbert)
