West Melbourne Football Club - History

History

The club was formed in 1879 and played in the VFA until the end of the 1880 season. They returned however in 1899 and had a much longer stint in the league, winning their first and only premiership in 1906 by defeating Footscray in the Grand Final 7.8 (50) to 5.9 (39).

In 1908 they merged with the North Melbourne Football Club in the hope of joining the VFL. North Melbourne wore a red sash on their guernsey during their first season as a merged club in the VFA, but dropped it in subsequent seasons.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Throughout the history of commercial life nobody has ever quite liked the commission man. His function is too vague, his presence always seems one too many, his profit looks too easy, and even when you admit that he has a necessary function, you feel that this function is, as it were, a personification of something that in an ethical society would not need to exist. If people could deal with one another honestly, they would not need agents.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now.
    Richard M. Nixon (b. 1913)

The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
