West Lindsey Local Elections

West Lindsey Local Elections

One third of West Lindsey District Council in Lincolnshire, England is elected each year, followed by one year when there is an election to Lincolnshire County Council instead.

The council is divided up into 25 wards, electing 37 councillors, since the last boundary changes in 1999. By-elections are held for any vacancies that arise between the yearly elections on the first Thursday of May. Victory in a by-election in May 2006 saw the Liberal Democrat party gain control of the council.

In 2007 an election for the Scotter ward was decided by the toss of a coin after both candidates finished with the same number of votes, resulting in a victory for the Conservative candidate.

Famous quotes containing the words west, local and/or elections:

The [nineteenth-century] young men who were Puritans in politics were anti-Puritans in literature. They were willing to die for the independence of Poland or the Manchester Fenians; and they relaxed their tension by voluptuous reading in Swinburne.
    —Rebecca West (1892–1983)

[Urging the national government] to eradicate local prejudices and mistaken rivalships to consolidate the affairs of the states into one harmonious interest.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

In my public statements I have earnestly urged that there rested upon government many responsibilities which affect the moral and spiritual welfare of our people. The participation of women in elections has produced a keener realization of the importance of these questions and has contributed to higher national ideals. Moreover, it is through them that our national ideals are ingrained in our children.
    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)
