West Baltimore (MARC Station) - History

History

The route of the Penn Line was first operated in the mid-19th century. It was first operated as a Pennsylvania Railroad Line(later renamed Penn Central), then Conrail. The MARC operation dates from 1983, and West Baltimore Station serves as a replacement for the former Edmondson Avenue Station a few blocks north, which today is a private business.

In 2009, it was announced that approximately 400 parking spaces east of Pulaski Street will be added, but this is a temporary expansion until the 2013 redevelopment. As a result, the portion of Interstate 170 that was originally intended to become part of its western extension but had never carried vehicular traffic was demolished in the fall of 2010. In addition, Payson Street will reconnect Mulberry and Franklin Streets, and it is also expected that the Red Line will utilize the median of what is now the US 40 expressway.
