Wendell Commercial Historic District

The Wendell Commercial Historic District is the historic downtown of Wendell, North Carolina, a town in eastern Wake County. The district is notable for its intact collection of one- and two-story brick masonry commercial buildings executed in the vernacular style typical of eastern North Carolina communities in the first half of the twentieth century. The roughly three-block district is bounded on the north by the 1906 Raleigh-Pamlico Railroad tracks, on the east by Pine Street, on the south by the rear property lines of the structures fronting Third Street, and on the west by the rear property lines of the buildings fronting Main Street. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July of 1998.

Famous quotes containing the words wendell, commercial, historic and/or district:

And silence, like a poultice, comes
To heal the blows of sound.
    —Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)

I do seriously believe that if we can measure among the States the benefits resulting from the preservation of the Union, the rebellious States have the larger share. It destroyed an institution that was their destruction. It opened the way for a commercial life that, if they will only embrace it and face the light, means to them a development that shall rival the best attainments of the greatest of our States.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

It is, all in all, a historic error to believe that the master makes the school; the students make it!
    Robert Musil (1880–1942)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
