As of the census of 2000, there were 3,380 people, 1,246 households, and 893 families residing in the town. The population density was 543.6 people per square mile (209.8/km²). There were 1,370 housing units at an average density of 220.3 per square mile (85.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 77.81% White, 20.98% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

There were 1,246 households out of which 37.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $26,838, and the median income for a family was $33,600. Males had a median income of $29,760 versus $18,621 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,538. About 16.3% of families and 21.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.4% of those under age 18 and 22.3% of those age 65 or over.
