The American father ... is never seen in London. He passes his life entirely in Wall Street and communicates with his family once a month by means of a telegram in cipher.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

My dwelling was small, and I could hardly entertain an echo in it; but it seemed larger for being a single apartment and remote from neighbors. Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law in one house are like two cats in a bag.
    Yiddish Proverb.

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
