Threats

A study carried out on the effect of elephants on the survival of acacia trees is not serious but needs be monitored so that the vegetation in the park could be well conserved which inter-alia stresses the need to restore the hydrological balance of the Waza–Logone floodplain. Field studies carried out on the killings of lions by poachers in Waza park has indicated that about 40 lions remain and may soon become extinct. One of the reasons attributed to this is inadequate patrolling. Though the IUCN prescribed a norm of one guard to 5000 ha of protected area, the eco-guards in the park number far less. This situation is now fairly addressed. Water supply to the depressions in the park has become a major issue for preservation of biodiversity. This has happened on account of construction of the Maga Dam about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the south of the park; Irrigation embankments have also been built along the Logone River, which resulted in lesser grasslands and total elimination of fisheries in some areas. This also resulted in drastic reduction of antelopes population and under the Logone Project artificial waterholes were dug providing water all through the year, but the carrying capacity of the floodplain has remained low.

Famous quotes containing the word threats:

Southerners, whose ancestors a hundred years ago knew the horrors of a homeland devastated by war, are particularly determined that war shall never come to us again. All Americans understand the basic lessons of history: that we need to be resolute and able to protect ourselves, to prevent threats and domination by others.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.
    Bible: New Testament, Luke 3:14.

    John the Baptist to Soldiers.

Among the best traitors Ireland has ever had, Mother Church ranks at the very top, a massive obstacle in the path to equality and freedom. She has been a force for conservatism, not on the basis of preserving Catholic doctrine or preventing the corruption of her children, but simply to ward off threats to her own security and influence.
    Bernadette Devlin (b. 1947)
