Water Supply and Sanitation in Germany - Water Resources and Public Water Supply

Water Resources and Public Water Supply

Water is not scarce in Germany, except for occasional localized droughts. Public water utilities abstract only 3 percent of total renewable water resources in Germany, or 5.4 billion cubic metres out of 182 billion cubic metres annually.

The sources of public water supply are as follows:

  • 65% from groundwater
  • 9% from springs
  • 5% from bank filtration, i.e. from wells close to rivers and lakes, drawing essentially surface water
  • 21% directly from surface water

Famous quotes containing the words water, resources, public and/or supply:

Talk of a divinity in man! Look at the teamster on the highway, wending to market by day or night; does any divinity stir within him? His highest duty to fodder and water his horses! What is his destiny to him compared with the shipping interests?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

How could a man be satisfied with a decision between such alternatives and under such circumstances? No more than he can be satisfied with his hat, which he’s chosen from among such shapes as the resources of the age offer him, wearing it at best with a resignation which is chiefly supported by comparison.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

The public buys its opinions as it buys its meat, or takes in its milk, on the principle that it is cheaper to do this than to keep a cow. So it is, but the milk is more likely to be watered.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)

With girls, everything looks great on the surface. But beware of drawers that won’t open. They contain a three-month supply of dirty underwear, unwashed hose, and rubber bands with blobs of hair in them.
    Erma Bombeck (20th century)
