Water Resources Development Act of 2007 - Veto Override

Veto Override

The House voted 361 - 54 (290 required) to override President Bush's veto. House members from both parties representing those areas stressed that Bush was misguided in trying to kill the bill. The next day, the Senate also voted to override the veto 79 - 14 (67 required), making it the first veto override of Bush's term. The bill only authorizes projects like coastal restoration and river navigation, funding must still be secured via the appropriations committees.

Famous quotes containing the word veto:

The veto is a President’s Constitutional right, given to him by the drafters of the Constitution because they wanted it as a check against irresponsible Congressional action. The veto forces Congress to take another look at legislation that has been passed. I think this is a responsible tool for a president of the United States, and I have sought to use it responsibly.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)
