Accreditation Status and Recognition of Degrees

The university has not sought educational accreditation and does not have a campus. As of March 2010, the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization states on its website that WIU is located in the British Virgin Islands and that its degrees are not recognized.

Lack of accreditation has consequences for WIU degree holders in some circumstances. For instance, the Michigan Civil Service Commission lists WIU among unaccredited institutions "from which degrees will not be accepted to satisfy educational requirements indicated on job specifications."

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) lists degrees awarded from WIU as "substandard," meaning according to the THECB in this case, "a degree... conferred outside the United States by an institution that the Coordinating Board determines is not the equivalent of an accredited or authorized degree." The THECB describes WIU as having "o accreditation from a CB (Coordinating Board) recognized accreditor. British Virgin Islands does not have postsecondary oversight capability."

Famous quotes containing the words status, recognition and/or degrees:

[In early adolescence] she becomes acutely aware of herself as a being perceived by others, judged by others, though she herself is the harshest judge, quick to list her physical flaws, quick to undervalue and under-rate herself not only in terms of physical appearance but across a wide range of talents, capacities and even social status, whereas boys of the same age will cite their abilities, their talents and their social status pretty accurately.
    Terri Apter (20th century)

Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.
    Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947)

Always the laws of light are the same, but the modes and degrees of seeing vary.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
