Warlord - Current Situation

Current Situation

Warlordism appears in so-called failed states: states in which central government and nationwide authorities have collapsed or exist merely formally without actual control over the state territory. They are usually defined by a high level of clientelism, low bureaucratic control and a high motivation in prolonging war for the maintenance of their economic system, mainly based on the extraction of natural resources.

Examples:

  • With the collapse of the Somalian central government, groups of rival warlords constituted the only form of authority in some parts of the country.
  • Other countries and territories with warlords include Afghanistan, Iraq, Burma (Wa State), Russia (Chechnya), Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Sudan, the Philippines, Pakistan (Pashtun Tribal Areas) and Tajikistan (Gorno-Badakhshan)

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or situation:

Men perceive that equating love and domestic work is a trap. They fear that to get involved with housework would send them hurtling into the bottomless pit of self-sacrifice that is women’s current caring roles.
    Debbie Taylor (20th century)

A point has been reached where the peoples of the Americas must take cognizance of growing ill-will, of marked trends toward aggression, of increasing armaments, of shortening tempers—a situation which has in it many of the elements that lead to the tragedy of general war.... Peace is threatened by those who seek selfish power.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
