Famous quotes containing the words cultural, magazine and/or committee:

By Modernism I mean the positive rejection of the past and the blind belief in the process of change, in novelty for its own sake, in the idea that progress through time equates with cultural progress; in the cult of individuality, originality and self-expression.
    Dan Cruickshank (b. 1949)

The novel is, or may be, among the mightiest instruments for swaying the heart and guiding the lives of men.
    P., U.S. women’s magazine contributor. American Ladies Magazine, pp. 357-9 (August 1828)

What are men celebrating? They are all on a committee of arrangements, and hourly expect a speech from somebody. God is only the president of the day, and Webster is his orator.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
