Vizag Airport - Accidents and Incidents

Accidents and Incidents

  • October 2005: a mild tropical storm hit the region and caused heavy rain, causing significant flooding and wind shear. The Meghadrigedda Reservoir on the outskirts of the city overflew and flooded the airport during the storm. As a result, the airport was closed for sixteen days. The lack of an Instrument Landing System at the time was believed to worsen the situation.
  • February 2007: Cyclone Yemyin swept through the area resulting in instant flooding, closing the airport for a day.
  • 12 May 12, 2007: a Paramount Airways Embraer E-170 aircraft carrying 60 passengers overshot the runway upon landing. The aircraft was operating from Chennai Airport, via Hyderabad. The aircraft was not damaged in the incident as it was caught in a 'soft ground arrester', which kept it from sliding into National Highway 5. Airport officials claimed that the crash was caused by pilot error in preparing the aircraft for a landing flare.

Famous quotes containing the words accidents and/or incidents:

I can forgive even that wrong of wrongs,
Those undreamt accidents that have made me
Seeing that Fame has perished this long while,
Being but a part of ancient ceremony
Notorious, till all my priceless things
Are but a post the passing dogs defile.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

An element of exaggeration clings to the popular judgment: great vices are made greater, great virtues greater also; interesting incidents are made more interesting, softer legends more soft.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)
