Victor Smith - Fleet Air Arm

Fleet Air Arm

The Naval Board now decided to send Smith to the Admiralty in London, in order to obtain information that would assist in the planning and formation of a Fleet Air Arm in the Royal Australian Navy. He returned to Australia in January 1947, as a member of the Australian Naval Aviation Planning Staff. Government approval for the formation of the Fleet Air Arm was given in July, and Smith was promoted to commander in December. The Fleet Air Arm was officially established on 28 August 1948, in which Smith has become widely known as the "Father of the Fleet Air Arm."

Famous quotes containing the words fleet, air and/or arm:

On the middle of that quiet floor
sits a fleet of small black ships,
    square-rigged, sails furled, motionless,
    their spars like burned matchsticks.
    Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979)

People fall out of windows, trees tumble down,
Summer is changed to winter, the young grow old
The air is full of children, statues, roofs
And snow. The theatre is spinning round,
Colliding with deaf-mute churches and optical trains.
The most massive sopranos are singing songs of scales.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    Four-room shack aspiring high
With an arm of scrawny mast
For the visions in the sky
    That go blindly pouring past.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
