Vichada Department - Impact of Armed Conflict On Civilians

Impact of Armed Conflict On Civilians

The guerrilla organization FARC-EP has a 'significant presence' in the department as of 2011. They have frequently kidnapped oil workers in the first months of 2011. Fighting between guerrilla movements FARC-EP and Ejército de Liberación Nacional, neo-paramilitary groups and the Colombian Army has displaced thousands of civilians in 2010 and 2011. Political commentators say that the 'resurgence' of groups like FARC-EP in Vichada and other regions present an 'immense challenge' to the government of Juan Manuel Santos. Vichada is considered in the periphery of the Colombian armed conflict due to its remoteness from more populated regions.

Famous quotes containing the words impact of, impact, armed and/or conflict:

As in political revolutions, so in paradigm choice—there is no standard higher than the assent of the relevant community. To discover how scientific revolutions are effected, we shall therefore have to examine not only the impact of nature and of logic, but also the techniques of persuasive argumentation effective within the quite special groups that constitute the community of scientists.
    Thomas S. Kuhn (b. 1922)

    Thomas S. Kuhn (b. 1922)

He could pause in his cross-examination, look at a man, projecting his face forward by degrees as he did so, in a manner which would crush any false witness who was not armed with triple courage at his breast,—and, alas! not unfrequently a witness who was not false.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

Meantime the education of the general mind never stops. The reveries of the true and simple are prophetic. What the tender poetic youth dreams, and prays, and paints today, but shuns the ridicule of saying aloud, shall presently be the resolutions of public bodies, then shall be carried as grievance and bill of rights through conflict and war, and then shall be triumphant law and establishment for a hundred years, until it gives place, in turn, to new prayers and pictures.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
