According to the last national census from 2002, this municipality had 55,108 inhabitants. At the census of 1994, it had 56,571 inhabitants. The majority are Macedonians (46,767 or 84.9%), while other ethnic groups include Bosniaks (2,406 or 4.4%), Albanians (2,299 or 4.2%), Turks (1,724 or 3.1%), and others.
