Current Passenger Base Plates
Currently, the 1977 green-on-white base as well as the 1987 "Spirit" base is valid for registration. The 1977 base only issued a single (rear) plate, whereas for the current "Spirit" base, two plates are issued. Registrants have the option of replacing the 1977 base with the "Spirit" base at no charge (though a different number will be used), however, most choose to keep their 1977 base plate as a point of pride. In many cases, the 1977 base plates are worn and illegible; technically, a car with an illegible green plate should fail the state's annually required vehicle safety inspection.

Famous quotes containing the words current, passenger, base and/or plates:
“I dont see America as a mainland, but as a sea, a big ocean. Sometimes a storm arises, a formidable current develops, and it seems it will engulf everything. Wait a moment, another current will appear and bring the first one to naught.”
—Jacques Maritain (18821973)
“Every American travelling in England gets his own individual sport out of the toy passenger and freight trains and the tiny locomotives, with their faint, indignant, tiny whistle. Especially in western England one wonders how the business of a nation can possibly be carried on by means so insufficient.”
—Willa Cather (18761947)
“I think it is worse to be poor in mind than in purse, to be stunted and belittled in soul, made a coward, made a liar, made mean and slavish, accustomed to fawn and prevaricate, and manage by base arts a husband or a father,I think this is worse than to be kicked with hobnailed shoes.”
—Frances Power Cobbe (18221904)
“... What are you seeing out the window, lady?
What Ill be seeing more of in the years
To come as here I stand and go the round
Of many plates with towels many times.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
