According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34.86 square miles (90.29 km2), of which, 33.78 square miles (87.49 km2) of it is land and 1.08 square miles (2.80 km2) is water.

Van Buren is connected to Saint Leonard, New Brunswick via the Saint Leonard-Van Buren Bridge.
