Etymology

The name Vadamadurai is derived from the Tamil word 'vadakku' meaning North. Vada - madurai thus means north of Madurai; the reason why this village was named this is because the Temple City Madurai has a Kallazhagar festival in its (Vishnu Temple)'Soundara Raja Perumal Temple', that is also celebrated in the temple of the same lord in Vadamadurai. The significance here is, only these two places in the whole of Tamil Nadu have such a temple with such a festival. The festival runs for 15 days, Aadi Therottam and Muthupallaku are important events in the festival. Nearly 18 villages people are participated this festival. The another important event is 'Mattu Thavani' (it means Market place. Selling Bullock and cow during the festival time). We can buy the varieties of Cows and bullocks in the market. is one of the with 'ther' (temple car) going around the streets on all three days.Vadamadurai is located in Dindigul district. Vadamadurai is a developing town in dindigul district. The queen named Rani mangammal from vijayanagar empire was once in this place and built the temples around here.A well followed by her name is situated in the trichy road of this panchayt town.

There are many villages surrounding vadamadurai. 'Udayampatti', a village in vadamadurai, where agriculture is the main occupation. Udayampatti name is derived as the people residing here belongs to Udayar Community. 'Kaaliamman - Bagavathiamman Temple' inaugurated on 2nd September'2011 is located at Udayampatti village. 'Tennempatty', a village in Vadamadurai, here more people depend agri and near alagar nayakkan patty village here more peoples naidu community. Near Vadamadurai there is a village called 'P.Kambiliampatty' (pilathu Kambiliampatty). It is located at 8 kilometers from Vadamadurai. Here, Kurumba Goundar community people are living. Their business is agriculture only. They speak Kannada language also. The Kurumbak Gounder community people will celebrate their temple festival with 'Thalaiyil Thengai Udaithal', which means they will smash the coconut on their head, on that festival time. These community people are the only people to do this in Tamil Nadu.

Vadamadurai is a panchayat under Vedasandur taluka, located 18 km from Dindigul in the way to Trichy (Dindugul- Trichy NH 45)It gains fame due to the spinning mills, and Sri Sounderraja Perumal temple . The Perumal Temple festival is very famous in the panchayat.
